Tammy's Intro

THE FLORAL INDUSTRY??
Most people who find out I'm getting my MET through Boise State are a bit shocked!  I'm a high school floriculture teacher!  I'm supposed to be all about "right-brain" stuff, being artsy and creative, not technology minded!!  But here I am with only one more semester after this one and I'm making it work.  What they don't understand is that the floral industry needs more technology.  I have several ideas in the back of my mind that could increase the number of people across the county, or even around the world, who could learn floral design.  There are several "distance" programs in floral schools for adults but they are pretty lame.  The instructor is recorded demonstrating and talking you through various design styles but its really geared toward that "mature" woman who always thought it would be "fun" to work in a flower shop.  We need to find the next generations floral designers and who knows where they are.  Most of them will be online and needing to be taught the basics in a distance program environment.

I want to learn to create interesting and intriguing podcasts and videos about floral design.  This is an area that I really struggle with and need to figure out all the logistics of it...you know, those "left-brain" things!  I want to bring floral design to those who don't have access to it.

CAREER & TECHNICAL EDUCATION
I'm also interested in teaching teachers who are in a Career & Technical Education Certification Program that is mainly online. I earned my CTE certification this way through South Seattle Community College and am also on the Professional Education Advisory Committee for that program now.  There are many things I am learning at BSU that will improve the online experience in that program.

So there are really several reasons I chose EdTech 513 as an elective.  This should be an exciting semester for opening my mind to many more possibilities!

  1. Tammy,
It is very cool how you are using technology along with floriculture. I think there is a need for more technology in various "artsy" fields. For example, I have a friend who is an artist (paintings) and I am trying to get him to showcase and sell his work on a website. He could reach more than just local people.

I love the picture you posted!

  2. Tammy,

I have worked in horticulture and also recognized that the field could use more technology. You have an excellent focus and an interesting field. I look forward to viewing your courses.

  3. Diane, thanks for the photo shout-out! I took that photo a couple of years ago at the NW Flower & Garden Show here in Seattle. Its an annual event that's alot of fun. I'm scheduled to take my Advanced Floriculture students to the show this year on 2/9. I always take a ton of pics.

I still struggle with how to incorporate the two fields of floriculture & technology. But Blogging is one area I'm interested in using especially with my advanced students. I'd like to work on them doing reflective blogs on their arrangements and commenting to others. So this part of the class should help me work that out in my brain a little better.
